The Master and Margarita

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

GRADS 2026 midyear production will be The Master & Margarita at the Old Mill Theatre in July/August. Directed by Finley Award winning Virginia Moore-Price, this magical dramatic comedy, with shadow puppetry, dance and projections, is based on the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov - David Bowie's favourite book! - adapted for theatre by Jean-Claude van Itallie from a translation of the novel by Sergei Kobiakoff.

The Devil, his acrobatic cat and assorted colourful cronies come to Stalin's Moscow to wreak hilarious surreal havoc on the lives of writers, critics and bueaucrats who have lost touch with their feelings. Satan sends some to the madhouse, stages a devilish play within a play, and gives the lyrical Margarita a whirlwind witch's ride climaxing in a satanic masked ball, as she searches for her lover, a writer known as 'Master'. The novel that Master is writing, focussing on the moral dilemma of Pontius Pilate in biblical Jerusalem, appears simultaneously on stage.

The play uses every dramatic trick in the book, including dance, shadow puppetry, projections and magical tricks.
